A 1985 batch Indian Forest Service officer has become the first woman officer to take over as the director of the Forest Research Institute in Dehradun.   Dr Savita who had joined as Deputy Director General of Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education in October last year has been holding the additional charge of Director since June after the repatriation of the earlier Director, and was officially appointed to the post. Chief minister Harish Rawat on 29th March laid the foundation stone of the Rs 32 crore multi-level parking lot at Kincraig in Mussoorie, expected to accommodate about 400 cars at a time. The parking lot will be about two km from town and tourists can either hire taxis or walk the rest of the way into town.Umakant Panwar, secretary in the department of tourism told TOI, \"We have identified PWD as the agency to undertake construction, expected to begin in a month. A leading outdoor advertising businessman Jai Singh and three other members of his family were allegedly murdered by his son Harmeet in Dehradun on Friday. It is suspected that a property dispute was behind the gruesome murders.Besides killing his father and step-mother Kulwant, the young man also killed their adopted daughter Harpeet Kaur and their three-year old granddaughter at their residence in Adarsh Vihar area. Harmeet reportedly killed all the family members except for Harpreet’s six-year-old son, Kanwal,The multiple murders have shocked the town, which was busy with festivities when the crime took place. The accused has been arrested reportedly in a mentally-unstable condition.Sixty-two-year-old Singh used to run the Colorarts Advertising Agency in Dehradun. His son Harmeet, 22, was living with him and rest of the family. Harmeet had been running a hosiery shop in the city. (Hide)

Bird lovers in Uttarakhand are in for a treat when a festival showcasing hundreds of bird species found in the hill state gets underway in Dehradun in February next. Named ‘Pakshi Utsav’, the event will be held at Assan Barrage between February 7 and 9. The festival will showcase about 600 bird species found in the hill state, he said. Uttarakhand is home to 50 per cent of a total of 1200 bird species in the entire country, Bhartari said. Apart from offering people a chance to watch a wide variety of birds, the event will hold a workshop on scientific and technical aspects of avian conservation. (Hide)
