Bageshwar was formed as a separate district in 1997. Earlier, it was a part of the Almora district of Uttarakhand. It is on the Eastern deck of Kumaon part of the state. The neighbouring districts are Chamoli, Pithoragarh, and Almora. It was known as Danpur once, in the late 7th Century AD. Later the Gorkhas ruled the place for about 25 years.
It is a highly religious place, there are two mountains Bileshwar and Nileshwar. They are on the East and the West side. North and South are dotted with Suraj Kund and Agni Kund. Bagnath Temple is the major attraction of the place. There is also a Chandika Devi Temple, Sriharu temple and Gauri Udiyar which has a gigantic cave. Folk dances which are famous here are: Hurka, Jhumaila, Cholliya, Jhora Chanchri etc. Trekking is the most preferred activity as there are number of ultimate trekking routes like the Pindari glacier, Sunderdunga glacier and Kafni located in the district of Bageshwar.
The airport facility would be around 180kms, this is the Pantnagar Airport. There are frequent taxis available between Bageshwar and Pantnagar Airport. The other mode of transport can be the train, Kathgodam is the nearest Rail stop which is about 149kms from Bageshwar. It is well connected with almost all the various Garhwal and Kumaon regions.
