The govt. of Uttar Pradesh founded the Government Post Graduate College, Ranikhet in 1973 with just on Bachelor of Arts Course. Since then the college has gone through many changes and developments to meet the requirements of the youth of this region. The expansion and developments of the college has taken place within the broader guidelines of the National Education Policy and the plans of the Educational developments of the state. The college has now become a multi faculty institution providing Arts, Commerce and Science Coursed at Under Graduate and Postgraduate level. It is affiliated to Kumaon University; Nainital .The College caters to the need of higher education of the students from surrounding rural hilly areas. A large number of students belong to the weaker and poorer section of the society. The majority of the students want higher education as means of getting, a job, especially in the Government Sector. The college earned U.G.C recognition under 2f and 12B in February 1984.
The college has now 15 departments offering Under Graduate and Post Graduate courses in three faculties of Arts, Commerce and Science. The college volunteered for institutional accreditation by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Bangalore and got 'B' grade in 2004.The college was started with the aim of imparting higher education to the poor students of the surrounding backward hilly area. Being a multi faculty college it provides knowledge and skill through various academic programmes to shape the students as sensitive and and responsible citizens. The kumaon University to which the college is affiliated designs the curricula on the basis of the guidelines provided by U.G.C.The college has been introducing new courses supported by the U.G.C. or the State Government form time to time. The Uttaranchal Government in collaboration with private agencies has introduced a computer education programmes."Shikar"in this college. Further the college has introduced 1-year diploma courses in Eco-tourism, Nursery Technology and Orchard Management and a three-year degree course in B.Sc. Horticulture.


The admission of students is made on the basis of marks at the minimum required level. There is no specific mechanism for selection of student. Member of the faculty provides individual guidance to students. The teaching plan is made by different department in the beginning of the session and administered through out the year through lectures, tutorials, class-tests, seminars and field visits. The college prospectus is updated every year. It gives detailed information about all aspects of college life and rules and codes of conduct, which the students are expected to follow. Financial assistance is provided to the needy students according to the rules and availability of fund. The reserved category of students of provided support as per the norms of the State Governments Facilities such as Reading room, magazines and journals and indoor games are provided. Though there is no employment cell, the students are assisted by the faculty and the alumni informally to identify job opportunities available at any particular time.
The college is governed and managed by the State Government through its Department of Higher Education as per the rules and policies framed by it, incorporating the features and guidelines provided by the U.G.C. Teaching and non teaching staff is recruited by the Stated Government with the help of its own agencies. It also takes the responsibility of training them. The chief responsibility of the college administration is to guide, assist and supervise the local academic planning to insure proper execution of the prescribed teaching programmes. The decision-making in academic and administrative matters is based on University Statutes and the conventions of the state government.


The appraisal of the staff takes place annually as per the rules of assessment framed for the purpose. The college has high-power and multifunctional body, Proctorial Board, which is responsible for the Grievance Redressed of all the constituencies. There is another cell, which deals with the grievances of women employees. The internal audit committee audits the utilization of funds generated by the college in each financial year. The Audit department of the Govt. audits the college accounts regularly on standardized scale. Housing loans, car loans and loans from the G.P.F. are available to members of the teaching and non-teaching staff.
